the appeal of casinos

I don’t get the appeal of casinos. I just experienced my first one, during our beach trip, and I can’t say I understand the allure.

The hotel is built around the gaming area, just like any good retail store makes you traverse as much of the displays as possible on any visit (you know that’s why the milk is at the back of the store, right?).

So you can’t go in, out, or through the building without hearing the click, whirr, and hum of gambling machines. Ok, so it’s like an arcade. Fine, except no one’s smiling. No one appears to be enjoying themselves. They all seem to be staring down the machines or somehow keeping up a game face. It’s all very solitary, as well: there seemed to be no camaraderie or companionship. Just people staring at garishly designed gambling machines.

On the most basic level, who wouldn’t like to win a pile of money? But the first rule of gambling is, the house wins. I don’t see where the fun comes into it. If you bet on horses or dogs, you get to watch them and cheer. Same with boxing or any sport. But sitting in a smoky, noisy room, stuffing money into a machine, doesn’t seem to offer the same experience.
