What's Wrong with a Consumption Tax?

This is a 2000s name for a sales tax, and its reality is no better than the reality of a sales tax. In fact, it is far worse than the sales taxes which states and localities currently impose.

Why on earth would we resort to dumb taxes like a tax on consumption before we have fully utilized smart taxes?

What taxes are smart?

  • Those that do not take from the individual that which he creates.
  • Those which don't distort supply and demand.
  • Those that don't raise prices and line the pockets of middlemen.
  • Those which do collect for the community the economic value of land, which is created by our common spending and our presence!
  • Those which help shorten commutes, reduce energy usage, reduce pollution, create density, enable effective public transportation.

In short, land value taxation.

Is there a sufficient amount of revenue available to support all the kinds of things we collect revenue in order to do? Good question. We don't know yet. Estimates vary, but amazingly, few government statistics exist. (What does that tell you?!)
