record cold day: perfect for a beach party

Yesterday, we finally had my five-year-old’s birthday party.

But as luck would have it, it was the coldest May 4th on record. Of course the original date, in March, was a washout sincde he had pneumonia, and we had a snowstorm that day. I think we have learned not to plan on outdoor parties until, say, August.

Carkeek Park is a beautiful place. It’s enormous, about 200 acres, and follows Piper’s Creek to the Sound. Once you’re inside the park, it feels like another world. When you emerge at the shoreline, you’re confronted by a fenced off railway line. But you can easily climb over the line on a metal bridge: this is also an exciting place to stand and watch the trains, usually long container trains, thunder below you.
