did they fall or were they pushed?

Mena’s Corner: Barak at Six Apart:

Tonight, on the eve of a change of position, I write about Barak Berkowitz who will be taking over my role of CEO.

Mena Trott steps down as CEO of SixApart, relinquishing control to a board member who joined in the wake of their VC funding.

Read it and see if you get the same vibe.

It says it quite plainly — “we didn’t want funding, we didn’t need it” — yet they were essentially challenged to grow their business into something that was more than they planned on.

Apparently, Barak knew what buttons of ours to push — Ben and I are extremely ambitious and to hear a lack of interest only spurs us on to fight. He was polite to us and told us about some cousin of his that runs a software company that supports his family and one or two other employees.

We didn’t want just that — we wanted to try to take on more.

Sounds like they were played like fish . . . I’m sure they’ll do fine, but this does complete the “Six Apart isn’t just Ben and Mena anymore” process.
