We just lost one of our Anna’s Hummingbirds to a window: can’t figure out why he flew into it but fly into it he did, and his little frame wasn’t meant to take the shock.
Funeral services are scheduled for later this afternoon.
This is how the little fellow looks from most angles . . . .
But if you are lucky enough to see him head-on or close to it, you get this display.
Farewell, colorful guest.
<update> Evidently, they’re smart (and nimble) enough to fly into windows, but they are aggressive and fearless. This can impair their judgment and reaction time. So perhaps it was a territorial dispute come to a bad end.
Doesn’t stop me looking out the window for the little thing, though. We have been tossing baseball or football within a few feet of the feeder as this one came to feed, and he didn’t seem bothered by us at all.
