Final transmission??

Have I mentioned that I hate Comcast?.

Something has changed somewhere in the past couple of days to make networking here very unstable and damn near unusable. Since a. this site doesn’t generate enough (any?) income*, not even enough to cover a TypePad install, and b. since I use broadband anyway for other things, hosting at home has just been expedient.

No longer.

It looks like I may not be able to continue publishing here: my options might be limited to using my broadband for my wireless surfing and dropping anything else. (Yes, I’m sure there is some magic with port forwarding I could do to keep this up, but frankly, I’m more than a little cheesed off at how much work this has become.)

I have a lot of other things to worry about right now, so for now, this is it.

* I didn’t even make enough Amazon Associates dough to contribute to tsunami aid — over the whole quarter. Heck, we already contributed 6 times that sum: I suppose I need to write another check for $10 and change.

found a bug, but not sure in what

Working with darwinports, it looks like building OpenSSL on a UFS volume (mounted as NFS) and installing from there to a local HFS+ volume has problems. For some reason, the port won’t install due to some filename case issues if the source files are on an NFS volume. If I do it all locally, it works fine.

I don’t get it. I would have suspected the target filesystem to be the issue, rather than the source one.

the demonization of Darwin

[IP] Religious leaders warn of Apple Computer’s “Satanic”daemon, Darwin :

“That suggests Satan to me, and I don’t think I’m alone,” James Dobson,
chairman of Focus on the Family, said during an interview on Fox News
Channel on Thursday evening. “Apple needs to realize this is offensive
to God-fearing Christians or face a boycott.”

good grief, there was some of this almost 3 years ago . . . .

The Pope lies near death and I don’t feel so good myself

Turns out I have been laboring under the strain of a case of pneumonia this week: a de-e-e-e-p chest cough that gets no better, accompanied by crackling/gurgling sounds behind my ribs, made me suspect bronchitis. The only way I could get into medical school remains with a mop over my shoulder.

Yuck. So on to the super antibiotics and a prescription for Robitussin with codeine in reserve (whee!).
