tale of the tape

So here’s yesterday in hits (yikes!). Picture 29.jpg Once you strain out the multiple hits per page, it’s still quite a bit of new traffic .

Once you strain out the multiple hits per page, it’s still quite a bit of new traffic . . . .

And today is looking similar, and it’s only 11AM:

I’m sure some people will claim that WordPress is TeH Suxxor and that’s where the blame lies, but I have lived through my MT days, with remaking of pages that didn’t change when you make a new post, with endless comment delays (how many MT site comment forms have “please submit once only” to assuage their users’ impatience?).

So I am currently weathering a wave of traffic from the popularity of this link and discovering where my hardware limits are. Last night, the MySQL server was terminated when the machine ran out of swap space.

This too shall pass.

Looks like some tuning tips I found here helped.

wow

So I wrote up a little thing the other week on how to move or repair a damaged iTunes library …. Picture 26.jpg I got linked from TUAW and that seems to have brought me a lot of new readers.

gas coupons: you might have some

She says “I didn’t realize it, but these coupons are good for one gallon of gas at most retailers…. You probably have one or two just lying around somewhere, now is the time to use them before they lose their value and it’s too late!!”

Funny, in a bitter sort of way . . .

She says “I didn’t realize it, but these coupons are good for one gallon of gas at most retailers. I have seen them around, but until recently never took advantage of them. I never realized their actual worth.

She attached a photo of the coupon:

Good for a gallon for now.

Hope this helps!

this is an interesting idea

This is the distance the hole in the base needs to be from the side.If you’re not using a swivel under the base, you’ll need a fairly large hole here, as you’ll need to install a socket (or “insert nut”) so the tripod can screw into the tripod head…. panarama[sic] head – This is equipped with a bubble level and mounts between the camera and tripod. With its click stops it lets the camera take a 360 degree picture on 12 exposures.

The Minolta Autocord had some cool accessories.

Hmm, this is something I could some clever reader of MAKE coming up with. I find the in-camera panorama mode to not work all that well. And I think a 360 (or as little as you want) would be very interesting.

Instructions to make one are below the fold (thanks, Brad!).

poking a hornet’s nest

Bow downtown

So I see a picture like this and hey, it’s good, well-composed, nice exposure. But check out the recipe:

Nikon D300 with Soligor 28mm f/2.0 lens and Hoya R72 filter. Allien[sic] Skin Exposure 2 simulation of Kodak HIE IR film, including grain and halation. I totally ignored the red channel and used roughly a 50/50 mix of the blue and green channels. The clouds had better contrast in this way.

That’s a lot of effort to replicate/simulate a specific type of film. I’d like to see something that digital cameras can do that film cameras can’t. A D300 is about a grand. The glass couple hundred more, plus some computer hardware and time.

You could also do this with a roll of IR film on a cheap film camera. The lens is of marginal importance as you have to stop way down with this stuff anyway. You get to be the exposure controls. So a high-end camera is of no benefit.

This starts to sound like Mac vs PC where the best a PC user could come up with was “it’s just as good” while forgetting how much time and additional components/ expenses it took to get there.
