So, OK, CNN doesn’t want to make the partners/affiliates edgy about paying for things they can get for free. But the feeds already exist: I know of two instances. I’m still of the opinion any media company with valuable content (ie, stuff they use to make money) should do their own feeds, adding value by making them available more frequently or with better quality information (better summaries or related links with the site).

Conan the Librarian’s not-so-little sister?

Thwart not the Librarian!

People become librarians because they know too much. Their knowledge extends beyond mere categories. They cannot be confined to disciplines. Librarians are all-knowing and all-seeing. They bring order to chaos. They bring wisdom and culture to the masses. They preserve every aspect of human knowledge. Librarians rule. And they will kick the crap out of anyone who says otherwise.

deep fried Snickers bar, anyone?

One of the staples of the school lunchbox has splashed into the frying vat as the newest must-eat addition to the Puyallup Fair’s food lineup: deep-fried Twinkies.

Of course, this is not a new idea: the deep-fried Mars Bar is Scotland’s National Dish.

This sort of food is the reason why Scotland has the highest heart attack per person ratio of any country in Europe.

It may not be a new idea, but it’s disgusting.

spiders and threads

Nicest of the Damned: Nice spider…

The question becomes, “should everyone on the web be sending out spiders?”

Or, another way to look at it: maybe a few people run spiders and the rest of us subscribe to them? It’s another aggregator, but based on content/context, rather than novelty. You get to unravel the web and weave your own.

I’m not opposed to spiders — they’re just fast automagic browsers — but I’d be concerned if there was a lot of repetitive crawling.

Another aspect of this would having it learn or suggest keywords based on a thesaurus or even note new words in proximity with your keywords: using the EvilBot, if bin Laden drops off the index of evil, perhaps he’s replaced by someone else and their name is suggested to you as a possible additional keyword.

ouch. even website access will be down?

The Seattle Public Library – Press Release –

All Seattle Public Libraries, excluding the *Washington Talking Book & Braille Library, will close Monday, Aug. 26 through Sunday, Sept. 1 due to citywide budget cuts.
[ . . . . ]
The entire Web site will be shut down – www.spl.org will not be available. That means on-line computer sign-ups, Libraries for All information, the on-line reference service, and other features, will not be available.

Now that hurts. I’m not sure why the website needs to be down, unless they’re trying to make a point. I don’t completely disagree, but I hope it doesn’t undermine the popularity of the online web services.
