Aug 6 23:46:39 shuttle pid 1260 (mysqld), uid 88, was killed: out of swap space So I added some (slow) disk-based swap, and you all now face the interminable delays as the kernel tries to work with that…. I’m sure some people will claim that WordPress is TeH Suxxor and that’s where the blame lies, but I have lived through my MT days, with remaking of pages that didn’t change when you make a new post, with endless comment delays (how many MT site comment forms have “please submit once only” to assuage their users’ impatience?).

So I am currently weathering a wave of traffic from the popularity of this link and discovering where my hardware limits are. Last night, the MySQL server was terminated when the machine ran out of swap space.

This too shall pass.

Looks like some tuning tips I found here helped.

So I wrote up a little thing the other week on how to move or repair a damaged iTunes library …. Picture 26.jpg I got linked from TUAW and that seems to have brought me a lot of new readers.

gas coupons: you might have some

She says “I didn’t realize it, but these coupons are good for one gallon of gas at most retailers…. You probably have one or two just lying around somewhere, now is the time to use them before they lose their value and it’s too late!!”

Funny, in a bitter sort of way . . .

She says “I didn’t realize it, but these coupons are good for one gallon of gas at most retailers. I have seen them around, but until recently never took advantage of them. I never realized their actual worth.

She attached a photo of the coupon:

Good for a gallon for now.

Hope this helps!

this is an interesting idea

This is the distance the hole in the base needs to be from the side.If you’re not using a swivel under the base, you’ll need a fairly large hole here, as you’ll need to install a socket (or “insert nut”) so the tripod can screw into the tripod head…. panarama[sic] head – This is equipped with a bubble level and mounts between the camera and tripod. With its click stops it lets the camera take a 360 degree picture on 12 exposures.

The Minolta Autocord had some cool accessories.

Hmm, this is something I could some clever reader of MAKE coming up with. I find the in-camera panorama mode to not work all that well. And I think a 360 (or as little as you want) would be very interesting.

Instructions to make one are below the fold (thanks, Brad!).

Not sure this is a great sample (will ” cuil yourself ” take over “googling yourself?”). ooops.jpg I have the third link from my name in Google (second if you allow that the second is an inside page at Beard Guitars).

I have the third link from my name in Google (second if you allow that the second is an inside page at Beard Guitars). And yes, I own a couple, but I’m not in the same league the guy who makes ’em.

so how to resolve this?

The title of that post is a little confrontational but “John Gruber doesn’t understand the FSF’s narrow definition of freedom as it applies the distribution of software” was too long. Anyway, I’m curious what Apple or the developers have to do to resolve this, if they care to…. I had this conversation with the Learned Professors at The Worst Job I Ever Had and they thought the GPL’s provisions requiring source code were goofy, as they had no interest in hacking or building from source.

Apple is in violation of the software’s licence for distributing these GPL applications through the App Store in the first place.

Anyway, I’m curious what Apple or the developers have to do to resolve this, if they care to. Is the GPL enforceable? Would Apple face some penalty? If you distribute the source code but the development/deployment environment requires additional resources (a developer key or API access code), does that mean the GPL has been violated? So far, Google and WordPress have put wares in the App store. Are they the sinners, is it Apple, or all of them?

I had this conversation with the Learned Professors at The Worst Job I Ever Had and they thought the GPL’s provisions requiring source code were goofy, as they had no interest in hacking or building from source. But I argued at the time that just because they couldn’t didn’t mean no one else was interested.
