Ted Stevens would do with some schooling from Richard Stevens

Tubes:

It seems, though, that it’s his saying “tubes” and “a series of tubes” that’s provoking most of the derision. But network nerds the world over regularly refer to the availability of bandwidth in terms of fat or narrow pipes, which is essentially the same imagery. Odd.

To which I reply:

Imagery is fine but the esteemed senator seemed to really believe that the internet(s) is a modern-day pneumatic tube system, where there are real blockages and other artifacts of the physical world. The idea of packet switching and the reliability that is at the heart of the internet’s core protocols seem not to be understood. The pipes used by net nerds are metaphorical, yes, but I think most of them understand that.

I can accept that some of these people are out of their depth with anything more complex than a TV remote, but surely they can be briefed a little more completely/cluefully?

and

What’s somewhat ironic about this is that the canonical books on TCP/IP internetworking are known as “the Stevens books”: their author was “W. Richard Stevens.” Shame Ted’s staff didn’t know that.

Just got my first roll of shots with my new Holga. Ooops!

I flipped the switch on the film counter (from 16 to 12) without swapping the mask, so I took 12 pictures (well, not really, when you omit the ones where I forgot to take the lens cap off) with the mask set for 16.

the stuff they say and do

My daughter, 7 going on 17, is making place cards for Easter dinner tomorrow and on the way to doing that, she made some small tokens of her esteem for her family.

Mine is a small image, about the size of a 35mm frame, with concentric rectangles in different colors, framing a bright yellow flash with the word “click” under it. She says it’s my pinhole camera with the bellows thingie. I’m tickled.

easy on the eye and wallet

Stopped off at Ballard Camera to dig through the odds and ends in hopes of finding a cable release and found that the film I was trying out is only US$1.99 a roll.

Froogle Image

Um, I’ll take two. I dunno much about it (it’s made in Hungary, it seems to work fine, easy to handle and delivers good images). But I know that price makes it easier to experiment. And the cable release quest was successful.

Now playing: End of the Line by Roxy Music from the album “Siren” | Get it

fruits, skins of

Just cutting up a pineapple and I wondered, what made the first person to try one take the chance? Just because some other animal could eat it is no guarantee of safety.

And is there a rule I never knew about on the skins of fruits? Skins of tropical fruits are often inedible (coconuts, pineapples, bananas) while those of fruits in temperate climes are (apples, cherries, peaches). Am I the last to figure this out?

Superbowl:

If the denial of the Seahawks’ first quarter touchdown was the correct call and the awarding of the Steelers’ first quarter touchdown was the correct call, then we’re obviously living in a world where I’m going to win the Nobel Prize for Physics next year. I’ll start writing my speech.

Eh. First pro football game I have watched in years, and not a great one. Seattle’s ability to beat themselves was more a factor than the officiating.

Baseball tryouts for little league are tomorrow, and that’s what really matters.
