if my iPod’s disk craps out, I wonder if a flash card will make sense as a replacement? It’s only 10 Gb, after all.

Nice iPod hack! Maybe I should find an old Mini.
I got my spousal unit a Red 8GB Nano for Xmas. One day, while it was still quite new, she turned it off and it wouldn’t turn back on. Took it to the Apple store and it just needed a charge. Evidently, if the battery charge is too low, the iPod is not detected by the PC USB dock. Not sure WTF is up with that, but at least now we know. Just thought I’d mention that.
You might have been able to reset it and recharge it:
1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Not something you would do by accident ;-)
But I have had to do this on mine and my father, who has a mini, needed to reset his for the same reason I think.
Nope. The Apple guys tried resetting it, to no avail. It was just a dead battery, after all.
To your credit, the reset procedure was the first thing they tried.
