How to create your own .mac replacement

This is a pretty comprehensive HOWTO.

Worth doing — as it saves US$99/year — but pretty far down the list.

I eventually got around to looking at this and I like what I see. I have an obscene amount of server space at Dreamhost and it might be worthwhile implementing this because I never wanted to pay the $99 a year for .mac

So that’s two weekend projects I have sitting waiting. Convert a wireless router (the $60 to $600 mod) and now this.

God it’s tragic that I get excited about these projects :)

Well, to ensure I keep some yak-shaving component in this, I need to rebuild my venerable FreeBSD 4.11 system and upgrade it to 6.x (I can’t quote a minor version: it will have changed by the time I get around to it). A format/reinstall exercise is always fraught with peril. A lot has changed from 4.x to 5 and 6 and I am seeing apps that fail to install on my obsolete system.

If I was really serious, I would use the downtime to install a RAID but that kind of seriousness requires funds I don’t have.
