JK Rowling’s spell persists 28

Posted by paul on June 29, 2003

I finished Harry Potter 5 last night, and am pleased that the depth and strength of the story continues to build. Sorry, no spoilers: you need to look elsewhere or read the book yourself if you want to know what happens.

If you found The Goblet of Fire to be heavy going or too intense, you may want to put this one aside. Sadly, now we face another 1-2 year wait for book 6 and then another for book 7. It’s like an elaborate meal: hours or days in the preparation, a fraction of that in the eating. I only started the book Thursday morning, just to ’see what it was like’ and then ended up putting everything else aside to finish it.

<UPDATE>
Just a reminder that JK Rowling isn’t likely to see any of the tributes posted here: I don’t mind them being posted here, but I’m not forwarding any of this stuff on (even if I knew her address).

Thanks.

I liked it, but I think I liked Goblet of Fire better. Goblet works better on its own, where this books really works through its context within the stories in the other four books (and the back story we keep learning a little bit more of).

Sophie’s really mad at me, since I took advantage of my later bedtime to finish the book (and you’ll never find a quicker 900-page read!) before she did.

    Dear Joanne,
I love your books. You are my favorite author, i do think it is really sad you killed Sirius because now Harry really has nobody. But it works with the phrophecy.I read the 5th book in 5 days. Anyway i have a question in the 5th book Harry can see the threstles because he saw Cedric die the year before, but how come he couldn’t see them in the other 4 years when his mother sacrificed herself for him and he was there and in the book it was the same spell that killed both Cedric and his mother, so i don’t get why he couldn’t see them. Please answer me back.

    Dear Ms.Rowling;
I am a huge fan of your books, I’ve read them all many times, but I am still stuck on one part in the first book. At the top of the Mirror of Erised it says “Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi”. I have tried numerous times to unscramble this, but all that I have is the first word “desire” and im not sure about the second word, I thought it might be “star” but I was not sure. Does it indeed spell out anything?
    Please write back!
    Your number one fan,
    ~Stephanie

    dear J.K. Rowling,
i, like almost everyone else, am a very, very big fan of you. i loved the fifth book so much. well…to the point… i was at my cousins house this past week, and all of us are complete Harry Potter fans. so, we all read the fifth book while i was there and while we were reading it we were playing a game of Harry Potter. it wasnt following along with the book, but it was when James, Lily, Sirius, and Remus were at school. so…one of us came up with an idea…which i thought was pretty good. well, actually one of my cousins didnt read the book, only part of it, and it was “Snape’s worst memory” and aftyer she read it, she knew it was her favorite part of the book and it so happened, after i read it, it became mine and my other cousins too. so, we talked about the idea, and we all thought it was good, so i said i would try to write to you about it, either online like i am now, or try to get it to you personally. well, the idea was that, we wanted to read books about when Harry’s parents and friends were at school. so we knew how Lily and James got together, how James became best friends with Sirius, how Remus got attacked and bitten by a werewolf, how Voldemort became one of the greatest wizards, and so on and so on. so, if anybody else agrees with me, :\ please tell me here, thank you very very much, and i hope that i get some people to agree with me and hope to see that you have looked into it a bit…
your, well, one of your biggest fans,
    misty stackpole

i really agree with u that wuld be a great idea since i myself am a HUGE harry potter fan. the idea of writing stuff about his parents early life wuld be really interesting especially since it could lead up to the part where everybody is tellin him how his parents died in the first book that wuld be sooooooo goood
and it would add up to alot of things

I totally bac up 100% and even more im happy that u came up wit that idea i wuld hav neva thought bout that idea

    Dear Mrs. Rowling,

I was browsing around the sites and i just so happen to come across this site and i read some of the comments and i thought that the 2 above were really great ideas. Maybe You could think about this request and maybe get some time to write some stuff about lives of Wormtail,Padfoot, Moony and the others.

Just thought i would express my thoughts to this suggestion.

    Dear J.K. Rowling,
I think u should write about Harry’s parents when they were growing up. I think it is a good idea and I would like to see it happen when u write your next few books.

Greatest series I have ever read!
I started to read the first book when I was in Thailand on vacation. I was finished with the first book the second day.

I drove around all town trying to find the second, and I did! A used copy in a supermarket.
Some days passed and I wanted more!

I got the third book from a english lady on the beach :D

This is the fastest speed I have every read books…

    Pleeeeaaaaseee Make more! =D

  18. Laura Patil Jul 11, 2003 10:21

Stephanie, it says “I show not your face but your heart’s desire.”

Anyway, I guess it would be cool to have books about Harry’s parents’ lives, but what if JK wants to take a break from writing for a while?

  19. misty stackpole Jul 11, 2003 11:15

    hey laura,
yea i know what your saying… butim not saying that she has to do them NOW…but it would be interesting…it’s just an idea and im only hoping it is a sucess! lol well yea bye!!! :)

  20. Billy Jul 11, 2003 12:15

A series about Lily and James Potter?! That’d be awesome!!! JK please do!!! You could call the series, “The Marauders” and maybe the first book could be called “The Marauders and the Rise of Darkness” (for Lord Voldemort) I dunno anything would be good!!!:)

  23. Tim Jul 11, 2003 15:23

please write another book im 1 of your fans and i love the hp series if another book doesnt come out i might have to go crazy or something everyday i try to read 1 of the books

  24. Liz Jul 11, 2003 15:44

    Dear J.K. Rowling,

I absolutly love your books! Your stories inspirt me sooo much and it really sucks that you only are writing two more books in the series. :( I think the idea of you writing about when Lily and James and Sirius and etc. were in school at Hogwarts and you really should write that! I’ll probably be at the stores at midnight to get them just like I did for the HP books. :)

I, personally, am trying to write a book like yours myself. I only have one problem… once I start it, I never find it interesting to finish it. I still cant believe it took you three years to write the new book! I could never do that! I think your such a talented and great writer and even when you stop writing, you’ll still be my idol.

  25. Carrie Jul 11, 2003 17:09

    Dear JK Rowling,

I really love your books and i really want to thank you for the time and effort you put into them. Although its like a black sheet of sadness covering my heart when i read that Sirius Black died, I really think that Harry Potter and the order of the pheonix was a brilliant but sad book. I hope that you dont kill harry in the end of book 7 because although it may be the last book of the siries, you should make it as happy as you can. I think it would be really cool if Siruis turned up in a portriat when harry needed some support because right now im not sure if harry has any fatherly people in his life and at this point in his life that is what is most important to him I would think. Please put lots of effort and heart in the next books and try not to kill any more very important people to harry :).

  26. Ruby Jul 11, 2003 18:48

    Dear Ms. Rowling,
I’m a big fan of your books. I’ve read the last 4 bookd in the series twice in English, and once in Chinese. I just finished the 5th book, and I think it’s the best one yet. The end made me cry because Harry lost his godfather. Please write the last 2 books soon, a lot of people are dying of curiosity to read what will happen the the famous Harry Potter. Just a note, that I seriously don’t want to cry anymore , so would you not make the finale extremely sad?You are one of my favorite writers. Can’t wait to read more about Harry. May I ask for your address in London because me and my best friend would love to write to you? thanks

  27. Will Jul 12, 2003 04:41

Didnt either Neville,Ron or Hermonine see Sirius go down, if he really did die wouldnt they be seeing the threstals at the end of the book, i dont really remeber much i’m reading it over for 2nd time , so my theory could be wrong
