two-wheeled fun

Written on 7/30/2002

Now that I have some idea how far and fast I am going on my bone shaker, I took a quick spin today: 13.6 miles. I used the speed information to gauge what cadences and gear combinations felt comfortable. I found 14/15 mph to be pretty easy to ride along at, but I couldn’t push myself much faster than that. I could have the cyclometer set wrong as well. The wheel size is 26 x 1.5 and the tire size is 26 x 1.95. While I think it makes sense to use the tire size, I’m not sure if I’m right.

But in any event, an hour’s steady work can’t be bad. I’ll worry about the finer points as I go.

It really needs the outside diameter of the tire. Go with the tire dimensions.

Since we’re all geeks here, I would recommend using the table in the back of the cyclometer’s instructions and rolling out the wheel with you on it…..

That way, you get the best representation of how much you inflate the tires, how much you weigh (and therefore, how much you deflate the tires), and how much the manufacturers lied because superfat/superthin tires were in style when they made yours.

On the other hand, on my latest computer, I used the book measure (for the tires), then adjusted it during a few days riding on a trail with markers every mile (the Piniellas Trail, in Tampa-St. Pete). When I was within 2% or so of the indicated mileage, I stopped.

Not sure if I need that much precision, or if this cyclometer can handle it.

And that’s the second time you’ve mentioned manufacturers’ lies today.
